Artist Statement: M. Valley
As an artist, author, and Pilates instructor, my work is driven by a profound belief in the transformative power of movement, storytelling, and visual art. Through these mediums, I seek to inspire the next generation to explore their physical potential, embrace creativity, and approach life with empathy and kindness.
My debut children’s picture book, Flying Mats and Acrobats, embodies this mission. The story originated from my fascination with an evolutionary challenge—the shift from quadrupedalism to bipedalism—and its impact on our physical and mental alignment. As a Pilates instructor, I’ve seen firsthand how teaching proper body mechanics can change lives, fostering strength, flexibility, and clarity. This inspired me to create a narrative where movement is not just an action but a gateway to self-discovery and service to others.
The book’s protagonist, Evie, reflects my vision of a child empowered by her physical skills and inner values. Her adventures on a magical flying mat symbolize the boundless possibilities that arise when art, movement, and mindfulness intersect.
As an illustrator, I sought to complement the story with a visual language that would captivate and elevate young readers. My artwork, compared to the bold shapes of Picasso, the vibrant hues of Matisse, and the whimsical energy of Miró, introduces children to the world of fine art in a playful, accessible way. These illustrations are my homage to the creative process—a process I discovered and embraced while crafting this book.
At the heart of my work is a vision for a more harmonious world. I believe that by teaching children the value of movement, creativity, and kindness, we can nurture a generation that is not only more aligned physically but also more connected emotionally and intellectually.
Through Flying Mats and Acrobats and the stories yet to come, my goal is to inspire children to soar—whether on flying mats or their own imaginations. Together, let’s cultivate a love for art, movement, and the joy of living fully and authentically.
